Hi, everybody, my name is Dr. Ayla Wolf, I am a doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental medicine practicing in Stillwater, Minnesota. And today I wanted to talk with you about a really exciting photobiomodulation device that I have been using in my clinic called the FlexBEAM. I talk about laser technology and photobiomodulation in my lectures a lot. And I’ve been using a specific laser for about the past five years. But the price point on that laser is pretty high. It’s about $6,000. So I get a lot of acupuncturist that ask me about using light therapy and photobiomodulation in their practice. But then as soon as I say, “Well, you know that laser cost me $6,000”. that’s usually where the conversation ends. So that’s why I’m so excited to be not only using this device in my practice, but also distrubuting the FlexBEAM. These FlexBEAMs are so versatile, because they are literally flexible, hence the name.

So this has three different targets here where they emit light, and it has three different settings. When you turn it on, you can choose settings one, two, and three. Setting one is red light. Setting number two is a combination of red and near infrared. And setting number three is predominantly, the majority of it near infrared with a little bit of red light, just that you can tell that it’s actually on, because near infrared is not in the visible light spectrum. So you do also want to wear protective eyewear, when you use the FlexBEAM, you know, mostly on levels two and three because it has that near infrared wavelength of light. And then level one is pretty bright too. So sometimes it’s nice to just have those goggles on as well. But the reason I really, really like this device, a is because the price point of this thing is $499. It is just under $500, which is a lot more affordable than $6,000. But the main reason why I love the FlexBEAM is because you can wrap this thing around any joints. I recently had an injury to my Achilles tendon from a workout. And I was able to just wrap this guy around my ankle like that. And it comes with all different sized Velcro straps, so that you can wrap it around an ankle, you can Velcro it together with these straps here, you can also run it vertically along the spine or vertically along the leg. And then using these side loops here you can Velcro it on to a thigh or a calf. So again, super versatile, you can wrap it around the low back, you can wrap it around a shoulder, it’s just it makes so much sense to have the versatility of actually been able to move it and then Velcro it on so that you as the practitioner don’t have to stand there and hold the device for you know, 810 minutes, you can just turn it on, it’s on a 10 minute timer and then you can go on with whatever else that you’re doing.

FlexBEAM for neck pain

So the way that I’ve been using this in my practice a number of different ways. For example, a lot of people that come in with pain are going to have maybe a combination of low back pain and upper back pain or shoulder pain. And so as you have that patient laying face down on the table, I can just pop this guy on their low back for 10 minutes while I insert my needles on the upper back, get my electro stim set up, you know maybe start running some electro stim on points on the upper back, the shoulder, the neck, whatever. And then as soon as this thing turns off, then I can take it off and then start doing my acupuncture treatments on the low back. Or if they have back pain and calf pain, you know you pop this thing on the calf, you do your back treatment, you can flip flop. I had one Crossfitter in that said “I’ve got right shoulder pain and left knee pain”. So I’d pop this guy on the right shoulder, I’d get the the acupuncture treatment going on the left knee and then after I was done, timer would pop off then I could insert my needle into the shoulder. And then if I have time at the end of my treatment, I can then put this on the knee. So in my clinic, I can just pop the Flex Beam on whatever body part is hurting, get some really healing therapeutic, red and near infrared light therapy going as part of the treatment. I do also offer that if patients want to buy them that they can.

Flex Beam

FlexBEAM for upper back and neck pain

I’ve been using low level lasers and photobiomodulation for over five years now. The second I got this guy, I just started using it every single day. And I’ve just had really, really great results. I feel like it helps to speed up the healing in the local tissue. It also has a systemic effect that’s beneficial. There’s just so much science coming out now about the use of photobiomodulation for acute pain, for chronic pain, scar tissue, for wound healing for improving the skin or dealing with any kind of skin issues. For cleanliness, you can use saran wrap as a barrier between the flex beam and the patient’s skin. Because you don’t want to have fabric in between the lasers you don’t want to place the device over clothing. So you can use saran wrap as a barrier if you’re using it in between multiple patients. You can also use alcohol to clean it as well. You just wouldn’t want to use any kind of harsh abrasive chemical that might degrade this plastic cover here. So I wanted to put this video out just to give you kind of a quick rundown on on the flex beam. I am selling these on my website because I feel like it is such a great addition to any acupuncture clinic and the price point is affordable. Patients love it. If you want to sell them to a patient you can do that too. I just I feel my Ii Gong instructor Master Chunyi Lin had a saying which was “a healer in every family”. And when I see something like the FlexBEAM, for $500, people can have a healer in every family by just owning a device that anybody in the family can use for a tight neck, tight shoulders, back pain or you know their feet hurt.  It’s so quick and easy to use.
